2025 will be the year of DECAF

It's no secret that decaffeinated coffee is gaining popularity by the hour. At Caffenation, the Sugar Cane Ethyl Acetate decafs from Colombia have been our preferred choice for the past seven years. While we remain loyal to this exceptional option, we believe it's time to elevate the standard and introduce you to the exciting possibilities the new world of decaf coffee has to offer.

First, what’s the deal with this sugarcane decaf magic? They’re using ethyl acetate (EA) from molasses to naturally decaffeinate the coffee. It’s a simple process – wet the beans, circulate the EA to grab the caffeine, and steam it all away. The result? Decaf beans with most of the flavor intact.

We bought two extra Colombian Sugar Cane EA lots - for sale at the beginning of February 2025 - to showcase how far you can go in terms of cup quality and crazy flavors.

The first one is a super clean washed coffee from Azahar:

Our goal has always been clear: to find a decaf coffee that can stand shoulder to shoulder with any other single-origin coffee in our lineup, even when cupped blind. For us, coffee is fruit, and we’re constantly on the lookout for clean, vibrant profiles, whether they’re washed or naturally processed. The AZAHAR RAINBOW DECAF embodies these values, offering a cup that’s both fruity and clean—everything we strive for in our coffee.

To finish of we have a super crazy weird coffee from Luz Helena. This is a washed coffee as well, but because of the weird process it tastes completely wacko.

I’ve never purchased a coffee with a wilder flavor than this one. It falls under the category of (grape)fruit-macerated coffee, a subset of infused coffees. Initially, we were opposed to this style of processing, as it often resulted in strange flavors and came with a steep price tag. However, we eventually felt the time was right to roast one. This particular lot comes from the renowned Luz Helena and, to top it off, is decaffeinated.
